The research-based Symphony breast pump has been developed specifically to support mums throughout their breastfeeding journey: to initiate, build and maintain an adequate milk supply.

Symphony is ideal for long-term and frequent pumping. You can continue using the hospital-grade pump you used in the maternity unit and decide later which personal pump to buy.

Card and Cord Protector and Mains operations:-

1)      To remove, unscrew the card and cord protector and slide it out of the guide rail.

2)      Insert the power cord into the power socket on the back of the pump.

3)      Insert the cord into the card and cord protector in a loop around the pin. Ensure there is enough play to plug the cord in.

4)      Push the card and cord protector over the guide rail on the back until it stops and tighten the screw.

5)      Plug the power cord into the mains socket.

6)      As soon as the card compartment is revealed, the card can be removed and replaced or changed.

 

Pumping Preparation:- (Assembling the pump set)

1)      Carefully push the membrane onto the valve head until it engages.

2)      Carry out all the steps with care and assemble the pump set correctly. Otherwise a good vacuum may not be achieved.

3)      Carefully push the membrane onto the valve head until it engages.

4)      Screw the bottle onto the connector.

5)      Push the breastshield onto the connector.

6)      Push the valve head and membrane onto the connector.

7)      Position valve head laterally.

8)      Insert the tubing into the corresponding opening in the connector.

9)      Place the protective membrane onto a flat surface and carefully push the membrane cap down until it engages.

Preparing for pumping

1)      Always close the lid when pumping. The lid keeps the membrane cap pushed down to prevent a loss of vacuum that could occur if the membrane cap came off.

2)      Insert the tubing adapter into the opening in the membrane cap.

3)      Open the lid of the breastpump. Press the oval button on the top of the Symphony and lift the handle.

4)      Position the membrane cap firmly on the breastpump membrane to form a seal. Centre the tubing connector in the recess in the pump housing. Make sure that the membrane cap engages and lies flush to the surface.

6)      Close the lid.

 

Breast Milk Expression Process

1)      Preparing for single pumping

2)      Mount only one membrane cap to the breastpump membrane.

3)      Switch on the breastpump with . Stimulation phase begins. The stimulation phase will automatically change to the expression phase after two minutes.

4)      Place the breastshield on your breast so that your nipple is properly centred in the tunnel.

5)      Hold the breastshield onto your breast with your thumb and index finger. Support your breast with the palm of your hand.

6)      If your milk starts to flow before the end of the two minutes, press to change to the expression phase. Make sure that the milk flows into the bottle properly.

7)      Set vacuum comfort: Rotate the vacuum to the right and increase until there is slight discomfort. Rotate to the left to reduce the vacuum slightly.

8)      Switch off the breastpump with

 If the pump has been running for 30 minutes without any manipulations (e.g. adjustment of the vacuum), the Symphony will automatically switch off.

Cleaning and Hygiene

• Use drinking water quality to clean the breast pump.

• Clean parts immediately after use to avoid dry up of milk residues and to prevent from growth of bacteria.

• Disassemble all parts prior to cleaning. Especially be sure to remove the yellow valve head from the breast-shield and separate the white valve membrane from the valve head.

 

 Important Prior to first use and once daily

• Dismantle, wash and rinse all parts of your pump kit that come in contact with the breast and milk, except motor unit.

• Place parts in a saucepan of sufficient capacity.

• Fill with cold water until the parts are well covered. Optionally, a tea spoon of citric acid may be added to avoid a build-up of limescale.

• Heat it up and allow to boil for 5 minutes.

• Remove from stove and drain water off.

• Dry parts with a clean towel.

Alternatively, the disassembled parts can be sanitized in top rack of dishwasher or steam-sterilized. Note: Food colorings may discolor components which will not affect performance.

• Disassemble and handwash all parts of your pump kit that come in contact with the breast and milk in warm, soapy water (except motor unit).

• Rinse in clear water.

• Dry parts with a clean towel.

• Use a damp (not wet) cloth to wipe the motor unit after each use.

After cleaning, when parts are not in use, put in a clean zip lock bag or store in a container with lid. Alternatively, the parts can be wrapped in a clean paper or cloth towel.

 

Instructions before using Breast pump:-

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching the breast and pump parts.

Avoid touching the inside of bottles and lids.

Clean the breast and surrounding area with a damp cloth.

 Do not use soap or alcohol which can dry the skin and cause cracked nipples.

 

Storing and thawing breastmilk

Room temperature

4–6 hours at 19 to 26 °C ( 66 to 78 °F)

Refrigerator

3–8 days at 4°C (39 °F) or lower

Freezer

6–12 months  at 8 to 20 °C (0 to 4 °F)

Thawed breastmilk

In refrigerator for 10 hour max. Do not refreeze!

Do not store breastmilk in the door of the refrigerator. Instead choose the coldest part of the refrigerator (this is at the back of the glass shelf above the vegetable compartment).

Freezing

You can freeze expressed breastmilk in milk bottles or “Pump & Save”* bags.

Do not fill the bottles or bags more than 3/4 full to allow space for possible expansion.

Label the bottles or “Pump & Save” bags with the date of expression.

No thawing

Do not thaw frozen breastmilk or do not warm breastmilk in a microwave or a pan of boiling water to avoid loss of vitamins, minerals and other important components and to prevent burns.

ln order to preserve the components of the breastmilk, thaw the milk in the refrigerator overnight. Alternatively, you can hold the bottle or “Pump & Save” bag under warm water (max. 37 °C).

Gently swirl the bottle or “Pump & Save” bag to mix any fat that has separated.

Avoid shaking or stirring the milk.

Do not use breast pump if the answer is NO to below question:

-->Is your nipple moving freely in the tunnel?

-->Is minimal or no areolar tissue being pulled into the tunnel of the breastshield?

-->Do you see a gentle, rhythmical motion in the breast with each cycle of the pump?

-->Do you feel the breast emptying all over?

-->Is your nipple pain-free?

--If you experience problems or pain during expression, consult your breastfeeding and lactation consultant or midwife.
