What is breast pump?
A breast pump is a mechanical device that extracts milk from the breasts of a lactating woman. There are two types of breast pumps - manual devices powered by hand/foot movements and electrical devices powered by batteries or electricity from the power socket. Women use breast pumps for many reasons. Women use the pump to express breast milk, which is later bottle fed to their child.
A breast pump may also be used to enhance the stimulation of milk supply for all women who are having low milk supply. And breast pump can also be used to mitigate engorgement - pain in the breast due to the overfilled (milk) breast tissues. This could, in turn, cause no proper milk supply to the baby. Pumping helps a lactating woman to maintain the milk supply steadily. Additionally, it could help the hormones associated with lactation to recover from pregnancy even though the extracted milk is left unused.
Reasons to use a breast pump?
Here are a few reasons why new mom may need to use a breast pump.
SEPARATION FROM INFANT
1. Pump only when the baby is sick to breastfeed. You can’t let the baby be unfed. Sometimes the babies are too premature to breastfed. In such cases, it is recommended to use breast pumps. Breast milk is the food, medicine, and everything for the baby in the infancy. Breastfed babies are more likely to grow sooner.
2. Pump when you are away from the baby while breastfeeding session due to undeniable and unexpected situations. In such cases, breast pumps can be a greater help to extract and store the milk to feed the baby when you are not around. Using a breast pump allows you the flexibility to get back to work or school without your baby having to miss out on your milk.
BREASTFEEDING ISSUES
1. Breast Pumps can help you relieve the pain and pressure of engorged breasts. But too much and very frequent pumping or use of breast pump can make things worse.
2. Sometimes the breasts become full with milk. This will make difficult for the baby to latch on easily. If such is the case, then the breast pump comes in handy to resolve these kinds of situations. Breast pumps are effective when the breasts are full as pumping the breast for a few minutes will ease and soften the breasts and nipples. This makes it easy for the baby to latch on.
3. Some women may have flat or inverted nipples. And this makes very difficult to breastfeed since the baby will find it hard to latch on to the nipples. In such conditions, breast pumps are the only option to pull out the nipples and making it easier for the baby to latch on to the nipples.
MILK SUPPLY ISSUES
Sometimes women don’t lactate (i.e.) don’t secrete sufficient milk for breastfeeding. Breast pumps are a great option to enhance stimulation and help to increase the lactation. On the other hand, breast pumping will help to drain the milk completely. This, in turn, will increase milk production to a greater extent.
