The Medela Mini Electric Plus Breast pump is the ideal compact electric breast pump for mothers who occasionally express breast milk for their babies.

The lightweight and compact handheld double electric breast pump design makes it versatile and easy to use either at home or when out and about. Cleaning and Hygiene

• Use drinking water quality to clean the breast pump.

• Clean parts immediately after use to avoid dry up of milk residues and to prevent from growth of bacteria.

• Disassemble all parts prior to cleaning. Especially be sure to remove the yellow valve head from the breast-shield and separate the white valve membrane from the valve head.

 

 Important Prior to first use and once daily

• Dismantle, wash and rinse all parts of your pump kit that come in contact with the breast and milk, except motor unit.

• Place parts in a saucepan of sufficient capacity.

• Fill with cold water until the parts are well covered. Optionally, a tea spoon of citric acid may be added to avoid a build-up of limescale.

• Heat it up and allow to boil for 5 minutes.

• Remove from stove and drain water off.

• Dry parts with a clean towel.

Alternatively, the disassembled parts can be sanitized in top rack of dishwasher or steam-sterilized. Note: Food colorings may discolor components which will not affect performance.

• Disassemble and handwash all parts of your pump kit that come in contact with the breast and milk in warm, soapy water (except motor unit).

• Rinse in clear water.

• Dry parts with a clean towel.

• Use a damp (not wet) cloth to wipe the motor unit after each use.

After cleaning, when parts are not in use, put in a clean zip lock bag or store in a container with lid. Alternatively, the parts can be wrapped in a clean paper or cloth towel.

 

Instructions before using Breast pump:

  1. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching the breast and pump parts.
  2. Avoid touching the inside of bottles and lids.
  3. Clean the breast and surrounding area with a damp cloth.
  4. Do not use soap or alcohol which can dry the skin and cause cracked nipples.

Pumping  preparation:

  1. Plug the mains adapter cord into the motor unit.
  2. Remove the battery compartment cover.
  3. Plug the mains adapter into the mains socket.
  4. Insert two AA LR6 batteries.
  5. Slide the cover back.

 

Preparing for pumping

  1. Wash hands thoroughly (at least one minute) with soap and water before
  2. touching the breast and pump parts.
  3. Assembling the pump set - Carefully push the valve membrane onto the valve head until it engages.
  4. Push the breastshield onto the connector.
  5. Push the valve head and membrane onto the connector.
  6. Position valve head laterally.
  7. Screw the bottle onto the breastshield.
  8. Insert the motor unit into the connector.
  9. Rotate motor unit clockwise until the long battery compartment is located over the bottle.

Expression

  1. Place the breastshield on your breast so that your nipple is properly centred in the tunnel.
  2. Set the vacuum control to minimum.
  3. Hold the breastshield onto your breast with your thumb and index finger. Support your breast with the palm of your hand.
  4. Switch on the breastpump. Slide the switch to Start.
  5. Turn the vacuum control up towards MAX until it is slightly uncomfortable. Then turn down slightly towards MIN.
  6. Make sure that the milk flows into the bottle properly.
  7. Turn off breastpump when the bottle fills up and slide switch to Stop.
  8. Use the stand to prevent the bottle from tipping over.
  9. Close the bottle with a lid.

Storing and thawing breastmilk

Room temperature

4–6 hours at 19 to 26 °C ( 66 to 78 °F)

Refrigerator

3–8 days at 4°C (39 °F) or lower

Freezer

6–12 months  at 8 to 20 °C (0 to 4 °F)

Thawed breastmilk

In refrigerator for 10-hour max. Do not
refreeze!

 

Do not store breastmilk in the door of the refrigerator. Instead, choose the coldest part of the refrigerator (this is at the back of the glass shelf above the vegetable compartment).

Freezing

You can freeze expressed breastmilk in milk bottles or “Pump & Save”* bags.

Do not fill the bottles or bags more than 3/4 full to allow space for possible expansion.

Label the bottles or “Pump & Save” bags with the date of expression.

No thawing

Do not thaw frozen breastmilk or do not warm breastmilk in a microwave or a pan of boiling water to avoid loss of vitamins, minerals and other important components and to prevent burns.

ln order to preserve the components of the breastmilk, thaw the milk in the refrigerator overnight. Alternatively, you can hold the bottle or “Pump & Save” bag under warm water (max. 37 °C).

Gently swirl the bottle or “Pump & Save” bag to mix any fat that has separated.

Avoid shaking or stirring the milk.

Do not use the breast pump if the answer is NO to below question:

-->Is your nipple moving freely in the tunnel?

-->Is minimal or no areolar tissue being pulled into the tunnel of the breast shield?

-->Do you see a gentle, rhythmical motion in the breast with each cycle of the pump?

-->Do you feel the breast emptying all over?

-->Is your nipple pain-free?

-->If you experience problems or pain during expression, consult your breastfeeding and lactation consultant or midwife.
