When pregnancy occurs in girls who are 19 years old oryounger, it is called as Teenage pregnancy, or Adolescent pregnancy. Generalsex education and easier accessibility of condoms has led to a considerabledecline in teen pregnancy, when compared to the 1990's. Till date many campaignsattempt to further reduce the number of teen pregnancies.

Teenage pregnancy is a cause of concern as it is associated with a number of pregnancy. These issuescan both be social and medical in nature.  Most teenagers don’t plan toget pregnant. But when they do, they are burdened to face an unexpected andundesirable pregnancy. The young mothers end up having to face a society thatabandons them- stress from which poses mental and physical risks to the motherand child. And so, adolescent pregnancies always carry health risks. Teenmothers-to-be forget or fail to receive optimum prenatal care. Situations likethese lead to pregnancy- related high blood pressure and other complications.The risks for the infant include low birth weight and premature birth.

Even as a teen iscarrying, it’s best to follow abstinence from drinking and smoking. Also, ifstill in a physical relationship, usage of condoms is highly advisable so as toprevent any STIs from affecting the unborn baby.

Teenage pregnancyoccurs in varied situations. Sometimes teen girls are sexually abused while atother times a heavy dosage of alcohol lets the teens go loose. No matter whatthe reason is, using a contraceptive always saves teens from unwanted pregnancy and STIs.
